If you remove the sand, you may get gnats back, but actually, I got rid of loads by bottom watering only and I only get the odd one now. Keep the sand on for a month or two at least, so you know all the eggs have gone. As for the yellow leaves, they’re unlikely to turn back. They do sap energy from the plant so it’s a good idea to remove them, but isn’t necessary.

Hey, thank you so much for this post I’ve just discovered your site! So helpful. I have fruit flies on my Calathea Maui Queen. It had previously been doing wonderfully but started dying and I found them on investigation! Before I found your site I found another that recommended using a layer of sand on the top of the soil so that the eggs can’t hatch, which I’ve done. Wondered if this is something you have tried before? If so, do you know how long I should leave the sand for (indefinitely and water from the bottom?), and if the leaves that are yellowing are likely to come back to life or if I should remove them?

Thank you!!

Unfortunately you can’t guarantee no bugs - and they have a tendency to just rock up uninvited. Large plants are better at fighting them off though! I don’t know of any specific companies, but have a look for companies that supply offices - they tend to have big ones.

I appreciate this post. Thank you. Now my question is... I want to buy some huge plants like big... and I want to bring them in but I’m scared of bugs. My gf had an awesome place with snake plants and split leaf philos and Mexican thyme and noooo bugs then as soon as I come along they just started getting bugs and dying... I lokey feel like the bug bearer at this point. I’ve washed new plants in soap and still seen gnats. Anyway if you know of any online places that ship bug free-ish plants- huge like freaking ginormous ones please let me know.
