I have used coffee grounds to deter a new kitten from using my indoor plants as a litterbox. He was a stray found on my doorstep, so he was used to soil not litter.

I sprinkled a very small amount of used coarse grounds. I left it for a few months and scooped out any mold if i saw when i watered. Once I was sure he stopped, I scooped out the rest.

In reply to mark. I don’t think so. There are a few reports of coffee grounds reducing gnats, but I think if it was that easy we’d all be gnat free!

In reply to Mary. Yeah, this can be an issue with a lot of DIY fertilisers. The mold on its own is pretty harmless, but soon fungus gnats will turn up D: My granny also used coffee grounds, but I think more because she hated waste than it actually doing the plants much good!

Used coffee grounds in my new houseplants cause that’s what my granny did. Verdict is out but I’m noticing mold on the top of my soil.. sooooo

Awesome blog! I’ve gone from having absolutely no bloody confidence in my plant keeping skills whatsoever to hoarding them.. I bought the moisture stick thingy you recommended and wondered if you could make a post about when to water each plant according to the stick readings?
